Essays on Nasir. The Colombo Plans.
Maldives became a British protectorate in 1887. By the end of the 1960's Relations between the two countries though amicable on the outset, was strained beyond repair because of the poor state of the islanders, due to the War presence of the British at Gan, and their unnerving, underhanded manner in dealing with the people. The British Governor dealt serious disappointments to Nasir, refusing to work first with him in the matter of issuing passports to Maldive diplomats. Frustrated, Nasir ordered the very first Maldivian passports to be made, independent of the British Authority and granting free pass to the bearer to whichever country that may accept. The Maldives thus first represented herself at the Colombo Plan, a bilateral regional plan for cooperation between member states in South-Asia. And successfully did so on 11th November 1963. Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi and Ahmed Hilmy Didi flew to Colombo for the meetings held at Bangkok, November 1964. The first Maldives national to hold the new 32 page passport, bearing passport number A0001, was Al Ustaz.N.T.Hassan Didi. The passport was later given to the care of Novelty Ali Hussain.
